UPLINK | Main Character Concept Art

Uplink's Main character design. The Engineer. They started life in the blue sky thinking phase as a fully armoured shooter hero. As production progressed and became less about bombastic action, so did the engineer. Their design has calmed down and is now more of a spaceman janitor. In the silhouette stage, I would communicate the characters link with technology with dangling cables and a smaller frame. Taking the design on, I thought more about how his accessories are useful to them instead. I tried using elements expected in construction to make the helmet feel more specialised for colony personnel and to give it a grounded feel. It communicates how they can breathe visually with the mask and how they may navigate dangerous environments with affixed lights and hard hat style nape. The final design takes everything I learned from the previous iterations and feedback along the way. I would go on to later break up the black and yellow in texture to make it less 50/50.
